Stories through artefacts

Today we focused on creating artefacts to support our speculative future. Here's a reminder of the future we are exploring:

"It’s 2058, social media is no longer what it was before. Everything now exists as a single platform. Our day to day life is now tailored according to the data that exists on our personal data file. Leading to a “Suggested Society” where there is minimal decision making."

First we need a narritive which includes characters we can talk about in our story. The narritive we went with was about how an individual, Jack, really enjoys the convenience of the "suggested society" because he can save time to work on other aspects of his life such as his career. The government’s heavy involvement in the way business owners can use Jacks data for their services, such as Jacks health data: what he is allowed or not allowed to eat, means he does not need to worry about anything, and can enjoy a dinner out knowing his needs will be cared for automatically.

After we set the narritive, we created a user flow diagram which clearly depics the future situation of this "Suggested Society"

Our group wanted to show different perspectives of this futuer, so we also created a character who had a negative reaction to this negative soceity. The is this story:

It’s 2058, the Suggested Society got shut down before it could reach the level of development that was intended. People weren’t happy to have their freedom of choice taken away and were purposefully doing things they didn’t like, and knew the system knew they didn’t like, in order to confuse the algorithm. The few sceptics to begin managed to convince the public not to agree to have their information handed over to the government built data file, and so it never reached the level of necessity that the government intended. People didn’t trust these organisations to use their information for good and feared they had malicious intent, so they boycotted and brought down the establishments.
